Scotty's Butternut Burley is faintly reminiscent of Lane's 1Q or RLP-6 aromatic offerings, yet in a class all its own. Upon first lighting up, your initial surprise will be the complete lack of tongue bite; this holds true consistently throughout the bowl, as this tobacco has the least tongue bite of any any aromatic going. This blend packs easily, lights readily and simply refuses to go out. It burns completely to a fine, white ash, leaving minimal dottle to contend with in the bottom of the bowl. How is it for taste? Imagine a blend of warm butter with just a hint of vanilla and honey, then add sweet nutty overtones to round out the flavor. After the bowl is done, expect a pleasant lingering sensation on your palate with no bitterness at all. Mild enough to be an all-day smoke, Butternut Burley leaves a pleasant room note sure to be a hit even with the non-smokers in the crowd. Scotty's Butternut Burley is the perfect tobacco to introduce a beginning pipe smoker to the fine art, and is sure to be a favorite of seasoned veterans as well. by Kurt O'Dell

Smoking a pipe is one of life's simple pleasures. Scotty's Butternut Burley, without a doubt, been nothing but pleasure. Starts with a light sweet buttery taste and aroma that leads to a visit with a great Burley. The sweetness never over powers the satisfaction of tasting a fine tobacco taste. If you light PA, CH and other burley blends .... this is a stop that you must make. It is a "go to" blend for me every day. A masterpiece blend.

I have been a pipe smoker of aromatics for fifty years and have tried many different blends. This is, bar none, the best I have ever puffed. Very mild and tasty. And the aroma, Wow! Even my wife likes it. Will definitely be ordering more when it comes off of back order.

I have been a pipe smoker for over 40 yrs. I seldom have a pipe out of my mouth. Butternut Burley is the only tobacco I have found that doesn't bite and tastes good all day long.

Also, the folks at Pipes and Cigars are great to do business with. Prompt service and quick resolution of very infrequent problems.

Like the description says it is the smoothest aromatic you're likely to find and taste is especially nice. Doesn't burn quite as well as 1Q in some of my pipes but I may need to let it dry a bit more.

I smoked through a very large serving of this tobacco quite quickly. The flavors are very clean, and smooth and doesn't leave any goop or film in the mouth or pipe. Comes from P&C at just the right moisture, and no (or very little) TLC is needed before smoking. Pack in any way you want too, it will be sure to please.

Dan's review cracked me up. See his below. I won't go on and on either, but I do have to say this is great product. It is not mild, it is super mild and there is actually kind of a nice aftertaste which is rare.

While I may have a tendency to be verbose and over-explain, allow me to put this simply. Butternut Burley is the absolute best aromatic pipe tobacco I have found. However, it is way more than just "faintly reminiscent" of Lane's 1Q (a blend I have enjoyed for some time now). It actually is nearly identical; only it is better. This is a perfect anytime smoke. Smooth, satisfying, and a delicious aroma. I will most certainly be keeping a steady supply of this blend on hand, in jars, stuffed in drawers and loaded in all my pipes.

Although I'm not particularly well versed in aromatics, or pipe tobaccos in general, I LOVE this blend! The way the flavor meshes with coffee in the morning is supremely enjoyable. It's not too heavy for a midday smoke, either. Don't skip this.

I have to agree with all the other reviews on this tobacco (as I often base my purchases on them). This is one of those you just keep going back to, a staple if you. I really wasn't all that impressed with the first bowl, even though it was a great smoke. However, time after time I noticed it began working its way into my rotation more and more often. And that's how it gets you. Great aro, no bite a little bit of bitterness on the re-lights, but this is a win win everytime.

I gave Trout Stream 5 stars, and now I give 5 stars to Butternut Burley. Good taste, very mild, no bite, and great room note. I like mild tobaccos and I like Latakia. I spiked Trout Stream with Latakia and now have done the same with Butternut Burley. It really changes the character, but remains nice and mild. Get yourself some Latakia and you can double the types of tobaccos you have at very little cost. On cold, rainy days I love my tobaccos with Latakia. On warm days I like them without it. Try it and enjoy! - KudzuKen

I tried this and HPCS Trout Steam and found them very similar, even though TS is cavendish and SBB is burley. SBB is very mild and has a nice maple/vanilla room note. I will be getting this tobacco again.

I'm an avid English and VaPer smoker, and was looking for an aromatic that I could smoke inside without my wife throwing a fit. I've not had good experiences with aromatics in the past, but, based on the reviews, decided to give Butternut Burley a shot. This is really good stuff! It lights easily, burns well, the taste matches the aroma, and it doesn't bite or get goopy! I will definitely order more!

I have been enjoying Butternut Burley for years. It is my morning smoke. If I have another bowl late morning, the people around me always comment about the great smell. I have some Lane 1Q that alternates with my Virginia Flake as my midday smoke. Both bring different flavors, but the BB goes so well with coffee that it may squeeze out the Lane. A good blend.

December 28, 2012

Nose-Note out of the bag is very, very nice.Obviously very heavily cased (very glossy appearance ).Feels a bit greasy.I didn't expect much from this aromatic but,it Packs well, lights well, and smokes like a champ. The nutty flavors can be elusive if your bowl isn't packed right.I have found that smoking it in a large pipe and getting a good burn fixes this. The room note is very pleasant even to non-smokers.(my wife likes the note only from this tobacco!)This is probably the best aromatic I have smoked to-date. 5 big fat stars from me.

I like a good burley pipe tobacco. When I saw butternut burley I ordered 8 oz's,plus my usual tobacco. The butternut burley is definately a good smoke. I have to dry it some in front of the woodburner so I can get a good easy light up and smoke.I like the sweet woodsey taste and sweet smell of the tobacco. I usually blend 7 oz's blwb,4 oz's MV 1000 and 5 oz's french vanilla. This gives me that woodsie ,nutty taste with just a touch of vanilla taste and smell.I also like to mix hearth and home old companion with hearth and home steamroller. Then I dry them till real dry. This reminds me of when I smoked 5 brothers and cutty pipe.Pipes and Cigars has the freshest tobacco I can find,so I buy all my pipe tobacco from them.

As my title says, this stuff is almost as good as 1-Q -- I use it for a little change of flavour when I don't want to go completely away from the 1-Q world. Very nice, and excellent value!

This is one of my favorites. It's sweetness is mild and it finishes well. No glop and the bottom of the bowl. Burns cool with an easy room note. This is a anytime/anyplace blend.

I ordered 4.0 oz of this blend & immediately smoked a half bowl just to get a taste of it. Pretty Good Stuff, IMHO!
My usual pipe smoke is a Lane Q1 (called Wilshire at The Tinderbox franchises), and mixed half/half with a Midnight Cavendish/Black Knight tobacco (ascribes to other names as well).
My evaluation of this Scotty's Blend is: it packed nicely, lit well & stayed lit while providing me with a nice, mild and flavorful smoke. It has a nicely defined aromatic room note which so far, has garnered high complements by all who have caught a whiff of it. The tobacco burned evenly to a fine ash and the finish left me wanting more.
Now bear in mind, I am not giving up my Lane Q1/Black Cav' mix, but I would have to place this Scotty's Blend on equal turf. I switch from one to the other and will order more when the time comes.

I'm a newcomer to pipe smoking, and this was the 3rd blend I tried. I was very pleased with it! The taste was a medium, sweet, creamy flavor with no tongue bite. It truly reminded me of montecristo cigars with a better room note and flavor. I will be smoking this for a long time!

It does live up to the description. Mild, nutty and likely to be a favorite with those around you who do not smoke.

for the novice, it is a great all around easy smoke. You will want to lay it out for a few minutes before loading up, it seems to smoke a bit moist for me without a little more time than i normally set aside. but its hard to wait once you open the bag...

relatively new to pipes(3 months) after a few years tobacco hiatus. i used to smoke cigarettes. I make it a point not to "speak to the wine" and so i wont "speak to the tobacco" because i find that most people will have to find out for themselves...

I ordered 4oz because i wanted something that would win over the wife and daughters. this did the trick without question.
My wife told me to come inside and smoke when the temps dropped below 25 this weekend. My 4 year old asks to come outside and sit with me while i smoke on warm nights. She actaully runs around the back yard, so no 2nd hand issues, but the thought is nice.
And my 14 year old teenage daughter says it smells nice. Thats right, teenage daughter compliments.
ok, aside from that, i does burn down pretty far, but i have yet to see a "fine white ash with minimal dottle". It seems about the same as a couple of local burley blends i have tried.
I definitely let it set out for a bit before I pack it. maybe a little more than normal even becaue it seems to burn moist for me.
so to summarize, it is a really good smoke that won over the ladies in my life very quickly. Its light and easy to like.
would be a great first blend for a beginner.
(which i gues i am.) second order for more will be placed this week.

I like a full bodied tobacco more along the style of English blends but the people who have to live around me tell me that kind of tobacco stinks. I also like cigars but they don't smell so great to non-smokers either. With winter coming on I didn't want to get kicked out of the house to smoke so I went looking for a good aromatic that hopefully didn't have too much tongue bite. I read about Scotty's Butternut Burley in the P&C catalog and thought maybe I'd found what I was looking for. Then I looked up the reviews on tobaccoreviews.com and this blend gets very good overall reviews. You have to kind of take the reviews for what they're worth because everyone has different tastes but what I was mainly looking for was something with little or (preferably) no tongue bite that had a pleasant room note and that I would enjoy smoking indoors ...

So I ordered a 16 oz. bag, figuring that if I didn't really like it a lot it could go into my collection for blending or just to have on hand. Naturally I was curious so when the shipment arrived I opened the bag and packed my pipe after letting a small pile dry for a few minutes.

This is a great tasting tobacco, there is no quarrel from me on that at all. It has a nice butternutty/butterscotchy kind of taste and it smokes very well. Everyone loved the smell. So half the battle was won, now to give it a little more "oomph" and I'd have my winter tobacco that wouldn't get me shoo-ed outdoors to smoke my pipe.

So I cut it with about 10% latakia and added a smidgen of perique to give it a bit more authority. Bingo, exactly what I was looking to accomplish. It's got the elements that I like but it smells good for those tender noses in my vicinity too. I've kept a good portion un-blended (or maybe I should say "without adding to the blend") to smoke with my morning coffee and have my pouch and fill jar stuffed with my adapted blend for the rest of the day.

This is great by itself the way Scotty blends it, it's also a great way to keep those sensitive noses off my back while I smoke a great bowl of fine tobacco.

Thanks Scotty, this was a perfect solution for me. If I want a bowl of something more aggressive I still have to go outside but most of the pleasure I get from my pipe is just puffing contentedly and this worked out real well.

I read the description for this tobacco and was smitten. I ordered up an 8 oz. baggie (that's how hook, line and sinker I was) and received it well ahead of the anticipated date. Tried a bowl right out of the bag and was not disappointed. The aroma is great, very inviting. Draws well with a great full head of smoke. The toasted nuttiness comes through and never quits. Mouth feel was very pleasant, several transitory undertones as the bowl smoked through. I plan on smoking it all Labor day. Highly recommend it. My wife is not a huge fan of strong pipe tobacco after notes but Butternut Burley left her pleasantly surprised by the complete absence of any offensive (to her) odor. A very pleasurable experience, worth every cent smoked!

This is another one of the few aromatics that I like. Butternut is a pretty good description of it's essence. Maybe a little like walnut? Not so much butter. Perhaps the flavor of an extremely mild cigar with a sweet tone? Lights and burns easily right out of the pouch, but a bit of drying always seems to help aros. Does not burn hot or bite the tongue. A very good smoke. For aromatics it really doesn't get any better. A 5 on the aro scale.

I've been smoking pipe for close to 5 years now, and this is the best smoke I have had in a long time. True to the description, there is no bite. As far as taste is concerned, there is a sweet creaminess about it with undertones of honey and nuts.
I smoke this every night, and my family actually enjoys the smell of it. One of the few aromatics I have found that both tastes and smells amazing. I would highly recommend trying it at the very least.
