There are certain things I look for when Iím in the market for a pipe. One is, if I am trying to find a traditional shape, it has to have the symmetry and balance indicative of the particular shape I want. Another quality thatís less artistic and more practical is light weight. This shows an attention to detail, as a light pipe is not only a sign of good wood, but also in allowing the briar to cure properly. And if I want a rusticated pipe, the rustication has to be well-defined and consistent.
These qualities are part of the reason that I really like pipes by Dr. Bob (Kiess). He has excellent command of traditional shapes, but has his own twist on them, and he gives them the consistency that is hard to achieve. His pipes all have nice balance with a lightness that make them a treat to keep in your mouth, and his rustication is remarkably attractive, usually with a fine pattern with polished highlights that sort of look like a close-up of shiny sand.
It certainly doesnít hurt that Bob also happens to be one of the nicest guys youíll ever meet. If you go to any of the big pipe shows, Bob will normally be there, but until then, hereís your chance to enjoy some of his talent.
