Many pipe smokers enjoy a natural finish on a briar pipe. The lack of stain, varnish or lacquer allow heat to escape pipe easily, and the unfinished chamber (interior of the bowl) allows for quick and easy break-in.

Additionally, through handling and smoking, the pipe will naturally darken, which will cause the grain to become more noticeable over time.
