AJ Fernandez New World
AJ Fernandez makes an incredible array of outstanding Nicaraguan-made cigars, but his newest entry, AJ Fernandez New World, has a great backstory.
AJ's father, Ismael, spent almost two decades working with the Plasencias before retiring. He came back to join his son, with New World being their first joint effort. The name is a reminder of Columbus' crew discovering tobacco on their first trip to the Americas, and this cigar really does represent a whole new world.
The box has a retro look about it, and inside are some dark brown, box-pressed beauties. The wrapper is a heavily fermented Nicaraguan capa laid over a rich blend of long-fillers from Esteli, Condega, and the volcanic island called Ometepe. The flavors here are deep and dense - coffee, earth with a pleasant but subtle spice and a nice touch of sweetness on the finish. New World starts off smooth and more on the mellow side of medium, but the strength intensifies further down the cigar becoming remarkably robust toward the end. Best of all, the price belies the quality and flavor of AJ Fernandez New World.
